There was convergence of opinion in Keffi at the weekend, when Dr. Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa, former Clerk of the National Assembly was given a grand reception by The Keffi Youth Reform Forum to celebrate his stepping aside from the Assembly.
The ceremony which was a special treat for Maikasua was described as a very successful one which attracted a large crowd of people from all over Nasarawa State and beyond.
During the event which attracted a very large crowd many speakers showered praises on Dr. Maikasuwa and described him as one of the heroes of democracy and a man that promoted peaceful co-existence. The event was held at the Assembly Hall of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
Senator Dino Melaye, Chairman Senate Committee on FCT, and Senator, (Dr.) Abdullahi Adamu, former Governor of Nasarawa State, who is also the Sarkin Yakin Keffi, as well as the Chairman of the Keffi Youth Forum, Alhaji Ahmadu Ladan Kambari, had described Maikasuwa as not only an astute administrator, but one of the powerful figures that have contributed immensely to the success of the current democracy in the country.
In his speech at the occasion, Dino Melaye, brought out the qualities that have endeared Dr. Maikasuwa to the people, noting that the whole National Assembly is missing him after he stepped aside due to his humility, courage, intelligence, honesty for his belief in embracing transparency, fairness and justice in whatever he does. According to Senator Melaye, Maikasuwa is a person to watch as events unfold in the polity because of his exceptional qualities of leadership which he said is worthy of emulation all over the country.
Dr. Adamu, and Alhaji Ladan in their separate speeches showered encomium on him and said, Maikasuwa was able to achieve the highest position of his career through his diligence, dedication to duty, respect for elders and his desire to be a change agent aimed at moving the country forward. The same view was shared by former Minister of Works, Dr. Hassan Muhammad Lawal, who also said, the sky is limit for Dr. Maikasuwa’s brand of leadership. Among other prominent personalities were representatives of the Senate president, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji Umaru Tanko Almakura, as well as the Vice Chancellor of the Nasarawa State University, Professor Mohammed Mainoma.
Dr. Maikasuwa came to limelight due to his passion for professionalism, and quality work, before he recently stepped aside as the Clerk of the National Assembly (CNA). He combined humility and integrity to reach the highest position of his career. It is on record that despite constraints and challenges, Dr. Maikasuwa’s administrative revolution has stood out as a lasting legacy at the National Assembly where among others he successfully introduced an admirable work ethics and a capacity-building training programme which is the envy of several institutions in this country. This, has no doubt, contributed immensely to the development and progress so far recorded at the National Assembly.
Dr. Maikasuwa’s bias for professionalism and technical ability helped him to establish an efficient administration at the Assembly’s bureaucracy where competent people were duly recognised and allowed to implement result-oriented policies which raised workers morale and increased productivity. Maikasuwa’s principled apolitical stance, sincerity of purpose and neutrality paved the way for his team to strictly adhered to the provisions of rule of law, due process, fairness, justice, procurement act and public service rules in all his activities in line with his policy that service to God and humanity is the ultimate issue for formidable leaders.
Whenever duty calls as a patriotic citizen, one may perhaps have no other option than to sacrifice your time and sometimes even your resources for a just cause. This writer believes that this would perhaps eventually be the spirit that would encourage an apolitical and quiet technocrat like Dr. Maikasuwa to possibly represent his own people at any level that he may be called upon to do so in future. It is a fact that Maikasuwa is not a politician and has never showed an interest whatsoever of becoming one. But he is also a person who will certainly not refuse to accede to the request of his own people whenever the need arises for him to do so at the appropriate time.
Though Dr. Maikasuwa frowns at attempts made to publicize his humanitarian activities, the Keffi Forum Chairman who said Miakasuwa is an apolitical personality and a detribalized leader also listed many assistance that he had been rendering to people especially various communities, the youths and many poor students whom he bought several forms which enabled them to proceed to higher institutions of learning. Moreover, this writer believes that Maikasuwa’s antecedents and pedigree will not allow him to hide for too long as already his people have said that he still too young to retire from active service especially due to the changes in our present political and social dispensation coupled with the high expectations of his politically active people. The elders say “the gold fish has no hiding place”.
